Rider Fitness and Tips
Though technically all that is required of you in endurance is to manage to get you and your horse through the ride and have your horse deemed "fit to continue", your riding technique and overall level of fitness can greatly benefit both of you.
Rider Fitness
As far as the rules are concerned, you could be duck taped to your saddle (or dead) and still be awarded a completion as long as your horse pulses down and passes the vet check. However, the more fit you are, the easier it will be to make it to the finish line. This can be especially helpful in those moments where dismounting, walking/jogging on foot, and mounting is required (which can be often depending on the ride and any mishaps). As with anyone, regular exercise and proper eating leads to a more fit rider and any complete workout program will assist you in your own conditioning. However, there are a few exercises that address the particular needs of endurance riders. Cardio, core strength, and legs are especially important. For specific suggestions from riders themselves, check out this Facebook thread. In addition, there are multiple groups promoting rider fitness, including the String Bean Distance Derby (by the PNER Green Beans but open to everyone) and Rider Fit.
Rider Technique
Correct, balanced riding will both help you and your horse better travel long distances. Dressage lessons are recommended as they will help you and your horse work together to travel efficiently, setting you up for success. Your balance in the saddle is particularly important. This Facebook thread provides many rider suggestions for how to improve your balance.
